Flossing a Child’s Teeth

Did you know that it is important that you floss your child’s teeth? You want to start the practice while they still have their baby teeth in. In fact, as soon as the teeth start to fit closely together, parents should help them floss daily. This starts around the ages of two and six. Once they are able to handle the floss on their own, you can let them take over, but making sure their technique is safe and effective is the key. Learn by reading more below with the help of your dentist in Carlsbad, Dr. Nguyen!

Importance of Flossing

Make flossing an important part of the family’s routine and children will get excited about it. This teaches them how valuable it is to protect the teeth from food and debris. When you begin flossing with the baby teeth, your children will already be comfortable with the process by the time the permanent teeth come in.

How to Start

Choose a floss that is flexible and soft to ensure that you don’t hurt their teeth. Tie the floss in small circles on either end of the floss strand so the child can slip their fingers in easily. This will help them to grip the floss before they learn how to use it on their own.

Then, have them follow these steps:

  1. Start with an 18-inch piece of floss.
  2. Loosely wrap it around both middle fingers leaving about an inch between.
  3. Slide the floss between the teeth with your index finger and thumb holding the floss tight. Do not snap the floss down on the gums.
  4. Make a “C” shape with the floss around each tooth. Gently move it up and down all sides of the tooth including underneath the gum line. Unroll a new part of the floss for each tooth.

It is common for the gums to bleed a little at first. Once you’ve been flossing for a few days, the bleeding should stop and the gums will appear healthier. If the bleeding doesn’t stop or you encounter any other issues, it is important for you to consult your dentist in Carlsbad. To keep your child’s teeth healthy, remember to also take them twice a year for a dental checkup.
